Every November, you see it on social media. “Day 1: I’m thankful for…” People start posting about the 30 Days of Thankfulness challenge. Finding 30 things to be thankful for within a month isn’t very challenging, though. There’s always pumpkin spice everything and cute kittens in piles of leaves.
Let’s step it up just a bit. What if you followed the OGO principles and expressed your gratitude to others for 30 consecutive days?
That sounds like more of a challenge, doesn’t it? But it shouldn’t be.
We should all show our gratitude more — and not just during the month of November. We should recognize others for things they do for us every day! Since we’re in the month of being thankful, it wouldn’t hurt for us to each create a list and try to express our gratitude for others openly throughout the month.
You don’t have to buy things for others or give gifts, unless you want to. It should just be heartfelt and sincere. We’ve come up with ideas to get you started.
- Bake a special treat for your co-workers.
- Write a handwritten letter to a friend who lives far away.
- Invite your neighbors over for dinner.
- Visit your grandparents and listen to their old stories.
- Bring in coffee for your receptionist.
- Share a genuine compliment with a stranger.
- Give your children each a note telling them why they are special.
- Surprise your parents with a home cooked meal and clean up after.
- Leave a treat in the mailbox for your postal carrier.
- Give an extra tip to your waiter for good service.
- Volunteer to rake leaves or mow grass for your neighbor.
You get the idea. Now come up with one special way to recognize someone and share your gratitude each day of the month. Post it online if it helps keep you accountable (use the hashtag #recognition). And don’t stop there. Continue the habit through the end of the year and beyond. Making others feel good about what they do can also make you feel happier and more positive, too. Let’s all follow the OGO way and spread some recognition!
